Meet the Member: Levi Chifwaila

Meet Mr Levi Chifwaila, Senior Nurse Tutor

Levi, now Senior Tutor at the Chitambo School of Nursing, must be Chitambo’s greatest Friend! He was Charge Nurse at Chitambo Hospital for many years before going to the University of Zambia (UNZA) to undertake a BSc Nursing, with a view to Nurse Teaching. It was Levi’s long-standing dream to re-open the Nurse Training School at Chitambo, which closed in 1992 for lack of funding. Levi campaigned tirelessly, at local, provincial and national level, including engaging the Ministry of Health, in order to realise this dream.

The re-opening of the school is going a long way to re-generating the whole Chitambo community, especially now that the Zambian government has also declared Chitambo a new District. This is largely due to Levi’s efforts in highlighting the needs of the Chitambo community with government.

Levi is a remarkable gentleman, and a very powerful dreamer! It was his dream to see the Chitambo School of Nursing being re-opened. It is through his own sheer dedication to this idea, and to rural health care in Zambia, that this dream has been manifested. His next, associated, dream is to build a state of the art school for Chitambo staffs' children, to enable them to stay at home whilst their parents serve rural healthcare. This is far sighted as it will help to retain valuable staff in this remote, rural area.
